Non-Standard Bathroom Vanity Sizes: How to Get the Right Fit Without the Custom Price

Mass-market bathroom cabinets are full of cookie-cutter sizes. Unfortunately, these don’t work for many homeowners because every bathroom is different, with its own shape and set of challenges. A mass-produced vanity may only partially solve the problem or simply not work at all.

Custom cabinetry may seem like the only option, but it can eat up a good chunk of your renovation budget, making it cost-prohibitive. In many cases, a high-cost custom vanity doesn't even offer the best quality finishes and materials.

Many homeowners face the dilemma:

“Do I need a fully custom vanity if my bathroom doesn’t fit a standard size?”

The answer is not necessarily.

There is a more budget-friendly and easier solution available, and for many homeowners, a semi-custom bathroom cabinet is the answer.

Many Vancouver homeowners face common challenges when looking for a bathroom vanity:

Problem: The vanity needs to sit flush against the side wall, but a standard-depth countertop is too deep. The door casing gets in the way, leaving you with the choice of moving the vanity away from the wall or cutting the trim. With a standard-size cabinet, this can leave an awkward gap that collects dust, reduces usable space, and forces you to choose a smaller vanity with less storage or an awkward countertop cut around the door molding.

Solution: In many cases, simply requesting a slightly smaller front overhang (½" instead of the more common ¾") or a shallower cabinet can solve the problem. We offer both options because our cabinets and countertops are made to order.

Problem: The door trim or baseboard sticks out too far, so the vanity drawers can't open fully.

Solution: Making the countertop overhang wider on the wall side can accommodate the thickness of the baseboard or door trim, allowing the drawers to open freely without hitting the trim. The wider gap can be filled with a cabinet filler, eliminating the gap and the need to clean in between. Since our countertops are made to order, we can adjust the size to accommodate this.

Problem: The vanity has to fit between two walls, but standard vanities and countertops rarely fit the space exactly. Awkward gaps on both sides can make the vanity look unfinished and create hard-to-clean spaces. For example, the wall-to-wall distance is 59", but standard available sizes are 54" or 60".

Solution: The solution is to size the vanity and countertop to the actual wall-to-wall opening. A slightly narrower cabinet can be combined with fillers on the sides to create a clean, built-in look, while the countertop can be made to the exact width needed. This eliminates awkward gaps and makes the most of the available space. Our countertops are made to order, so we can adjust the size to suit your space and provide side splashes.

Problem: The plumbing comes through the side wall or is positioned awkwardly, right where the vanity drawers need to go. With a standard vanity, you may have to move the plumbing, and in some cases, that may not even be possible—especially in a strata building.

Solution: An offset sink base or modular cabinet configuration allows you to choose the placement of the sink base and drawers. This allows the sink to align with the existing plumbing, avoiding the need to move pipes and preserving usable drawer space. Not to mention, it can save homeowners hundreds or even thousands of dollars in plumbing costs.
